Description

This tutorial introduces the basics of data visualization. Participants will learn why data visualization is important, considerations in choosing a visualization, and how to construct and customize charts using R and ggplot.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the broader landscape of data visualization
  • Understand the importance of plotting your data
  • Understand how ggplot decomposes graphs into combinable components ("grammar of graphics")
    • layers, scales, coordinate systems, faceting
  • Produce scatter plots
  • Customize plots
  • Know when to use different types of visual encodings
    • position, size, color, shape
