This tutorial introduces the basics of data visualization. Participants will learn why data visualization is important, considerations in choosing a visualization, and how to construct and customize charts using R and ggplot.
Learning objectives
- Understand the broader landscape of data visualization
- Understand the importance of plotting your data
- Understand how ggplot decomposes graphs into combinable components ("grammar of graphics")
- layers, scales, coordinate systems, faceting
- Produce scatter plots
- Customize plots
- Know when to use different types of visual encodings
- position, size, color, shape
