Important: Extreme OS Upgrade Schedule

Dear Extreme Users,

We have finalized our plans for the upgrade of the operating system on the Extreme computational cluster from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7 and are sending this message to inform you of some important dates and action items to take to ensure a smooth transition to the new operating system.

May 9: Batch7 queue opens for testing of workflows on CentOS 7. Instructions for compiling software and submitting jobs can be found here (you must be on campus or on the UIC VPN to access this page). The testing period will extend through June 24. During this time, new account requests and other non-essential services may take slightly longer than usual to complete.

May 20: Extreme login-2 node to be upgraded to CentOS 7. After this date, users will no longer be able to use this node to compile programs destined to run on the CentOS 6 compute nodes. However, login-1 will still be available for CentOS 6 code compilations.

June 24: Testing period on the batch7 queue ends. All users should have tested their software on this queue and reported any problems to ACER by this date. To report a problem, please put in a support request or email us at acer@uic.edu. After this date, we will begin upgrading all nodes running CentOS 6 to CentOS 7. An email containing the upgrade schedule for each job queue will be sent out prior to beginning the upgrade.

July 11: Upgrade to CentOS 7 completed.

We remind you that this upgrade is necessary because CentOS 6 is incompatible with the new storage infrastructure coming this Summer. Please contact us at acer@uic.edu if you have any questions or concerns, and thank you for your cooperation.

Best  regards,
ACER Team
