Login access to Extreme and SABER will end on Sept. 15, 2024

Dear Extreme and SABER Users,

With the new Lakeshore HPC cluster up and running, the time has come to begin sunsetting the Extreme and SABER clusters after nearly ten years of service to UIC researchers. As of September 15, 2024, access to the login nodes on Extreme and SABER will be shut down and the cluster will no longer be available for computational use. Users with access to computing resources on Lakeshore are strongly encouraged to begin moving their analyses to the new cluster as soon as possible to avoid possible interruptions to their research. Access to the HPC file system will remain available until November 15, 2024 through the Globus data transfer service.

To aid in the transition to the new system, ACER will present tutorials on transitioning to the new Lakeshore cluster throughout the summer. The first of these tutorials will be held on Wednesday, July 17th, at 3:30 pm. Connection information for this tutorial can be found here. ACER staff members will also gladly meet with individual workgroups to help with the transition to the new system.

For researchers who did not participate in the HPC Partnership program on Lakeshore HPC cluster till now, it may still be possible to get access to compute and storage resources through our Chicago Computes program, ACER’s HPC in the Cloud cluster, or through our external partnerships with ACCESS and the ALCF Lighthouse Initiative. To learn more about these options and help decide which resource is right for you, please visit our Extreme & SABER Decommissioning webpage (Note: access to this page is limited to persons on the UIC Network or connected through the UIC VPN). Researchers with active grants in urgent need of HPC resources are also strongly encouraged to contact us at acer@uic.edu to discuss all the available options.

Best Regards,
ACER Team
