Globus
ACER provides campus-wide access to Globus to facilitate data exchanges between UIC and the research community at large. Globus is linked to a pool of more than 10,000 data storage systems (called "collections") which are accessible through the Globus data management service. Using the Globus Connect Personal desktop application, researchers can initiate and manage high-speed GridFTP transfers between eligible academic, government, and commercial computing facilities.
ACER manages five collections for the ACER-managed storage systems which include:
- UIC ACER HPC Local Filesystems (Extreme/SABER cluster storage - To be decommissioned November 15 2024)
- UIC ACER Research Data Rapids (Lakeshore cluster storage)
- UIC ACER Research Data Lake
- UIC ACER Research Data Lake HA (for sensitive data storage on RDL)
- UIC ACER Research Data Glacier
Access
All UIC faculty, staff, and students can use Globus at all time by logging into globus.org with their UIC netID and password. To get access to the ACER-managed collections, researchers must have access to storage on the connected storage system. To request access to an existing storage account, they may use the Research Computing Access Form. If there is not an appropriate storage account to use, new storage quotas may be purchased by navigating to the Research Data Storage section of the website. Once provisioned access, users can use the Globus collections to store their data on ACER’s storage filesystems.
Researchers who do not have accounts on any of our research computing systems can request storage through Chicago Computes which provides a limited amount of storage for free for UIC faculty members.
Usage
Instructions for using this service to transfer files can be found on our Globus Personal Connect Instructions webpage (Note: access to this page is limited to persons on the UIC Network or connected through the UIC VPN).Users of the DTN are expected to abide by HPRNet policies and guidelines and Research Data Storage policies.
Sensitive data policy: The University of Illinois has a BAA with Globus to manage and share protected datasets such as FERPA, PHI/HIPAA. Please note that not all collections and storage systems are approved for sensitive data. Please request a consultation with ACER staff to identify the appropriate storage service for your sensitive data by filling out the Consultation request form.
